How Do I Start Learning Spanish?
This being the question people ask after asking if they should be learning.
I am a huge, huge fan of the online tutor site called PREPLY.
With Preply, you have the option to narrow down your tutor choice to one from any certain region or country you want them to be from. And then you can watch a video recorded by each tutor to narrow down who you think you'd like to learn from! The regional selection is really great for when you want to make sure you're learning something that resembles the language where you are relocating to.
In Spain, the type of Spanish spoken is not the same as that of any other Spanish-speaking country. In fact, every one has its own pretty distinct sound, along with different words and phrases that don't jive from one country to the next. So although it's "all Spanish", even people who grew up in Mexico who move to Spain have a learning curve here when it comes to the specifics. With Preply, you can start right out with European Spanish from a tutor who is from Spain. And if you try, you may even find one from the region in Spain that you're moving to!
My first tutor who taught my very first Spanish classes was from Alicante, and I also had one from Madrid. To this day, I'm friends with my Madrid tutor, and he has come to visit us all in Andalucía since we moved here! All 4 of us have taken his courses. Once you move, you may find that you want to move into in-person classes in your city or try another route, but personally I think the flexibility and great tutors on Preply make it the best choice for the learn-before-you-go (or even when you're prepping to visit for an exploratory trip... a pack of classes before you leave can make a big difference!). Visit them at --> Preply.com, and I believe if you're new you'll even get a discount on your first session.
